Fatal Shooting at Booysens Magistrates Court Leaves Two Dead

The familiar hum of legal proceedings at the Booysens Magistrates Court was violently interrupted on Tuesday morning, as a shooting incident left two people dead and three others wounded.

The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Development confirmed the "serious and active" situation shortly after the gunfire erupted today, 20 January 2026. Early reports indicate that five people in total were struck by bullets; tragically, two of the victims were declared deceased at the scene.

Chaos in the Corridors of Justice

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and the legal fraternity. Law enforcement agencies and emergency services remain on-site, cordoning off the area and processing the crime scene. While the motive remains unclear, the Ministry has confirmed that Deputy Minister Andries Nel is en route to the court to assess the situation firsthand.

The Ministry released a stern statement condemning the violence:

"The Ministry condemns this incident in the strongest possible terms and will work with the relevant security and law enforcement authorities to ensure that all necessary measures are implemented to safeguard court users and personnel."

A Disturbing Pattern of Courtroom Violence

For many South Africans in their 20s and 30s—a demographic increasingly vocal about public safety and the sanctity of the rule of law—this event feels like a recurring nightmare. Today’s tragedy follows a string of similar incidents over the past year at the Athlone, Mitchells Plain, and Wynberg Magistrates Courts, as well as Melmoth Court in KwaZulu-Natal.

The recurring nature of these security breaches raises urgent questions about the safety of witnesses, legal professionals, and the public within what are supposed to be "gun-free" zones.

Current Status and Next Steps

  • Casualties: 2 confirmed fatalities, 3 injured (currently receiving medical attention).

  • Security: The court is currently on lockdown.

  • Investigation: SAPS and internal justice department investigators are on the ground.

  • Updates: The Ministry has promised further verified details as information is processed.

As the city grapples with this latest act of brazen violence, the focus shifts to whether the Department of Justice can move beyond condemnation and implement the high-level security overhauls many have been calling for.
