Paarl Royals creates history at Boland Park and eliminates DSG

This marks the first instance of any team finishing the league phase of the competition unbeaten at home.

The Royals secured this achievement with a six-wicket victory over Durban’s Super Giants, resulting in the elimination of last season’s runners-up, who can no longer qualify for the playoffs.

South Africa’s young talents, Kwena Maphaka and Luhan-dre Pretorius, played a crucial role in the Royals maintaining their lead at the top of the Betway SA20 table.

 “I was really itching to put in a good performance. Had not been performing too well, wanted to put up a good performance for the boys and the team,” Maphaka said.

Maphaka had his best performance of the tournament so far, taking 2 wickets for 22 runs, which helped restrict DSG to a total of 143 runs for 7 wickets. Pretorius then contributed significantly to the successful run chase by scoring 43 runs off 29 balls, including 5 fours and 1 six.

Pretorius reclaimed the top run-scorer position from his opening partner Joe Root, by becoming the first batter to pass the 300-run mark in Season 3.

The Royals have certainly discovered a number of talented young batters this season. Rubin Hermann continued his impressive debut in the SA20 tournament, scoring a solid 59 runs off 51 balls, which included four fours and two sixes, to help set up the chase.

In a dramatic conclusion, all-rounder Dayyaan Galiem decisively struck the winning six with only two balls left, clinching victory for the Royals.

The Super Giants experienced a season where they struggled to find form at critical moments, potentially contributing to their disappointing performance. Keshav Maharaj's team faced challenges that affected their overall results.

The only concern for the Royals is the fitness of captain David Miller, who left the field during DSG’s innings and did not come out to bat in the run chase.
