Boland Witsentraal Grand Challenge Derby: Roses United Target Another Win Against Newton RFC

It’s derby week in Wellington, and excitement is building as Roses United Rugby Club prepares to take on Newton RFC in what promises to be one of the most intense clashes of the Boland Grand Challenge season. The match is scheduled for Saturday, 16 August 2025. Undefeated Roses United aims to continue their perfect season and extend their unbeaten streak, while the Bombelas aims to put up a resilient performance at their Home ground.

Roses United has had an incredible season, having played 18 games and won all of them. Last Saturday, 09 August 2025, they beat Villagers Newton RFC 46-10, showing a strong attacking and solid defensive performance.

Newton RFC, also known as Bombelas by supporters, will be preparing with precision for this upcoming fixture. They won their last match 36-31 against Bella Vista Rugby Klub, showing they can perform under pressure. As reigning Wit-Sentraal Grand Challenge Champions, they will be looking to challenge Roses United and disrupt their winning streak.

Earlier this year, Roses United faced Newton RFC in the first round of the competition and secured a win of 36-34, giving them confidence heading into this weekend’s Derby. However, Newton will still remember their previous encounter on 11 May 2024, when they defeated Roses United by 19-18. Recent history between the teams adds an extra layer of intensity ahead of this weekend’s Derby.

Roses United Chairperson, Herman Bailey told National Citizen that his team is prepared. “Our team’s preparation has been going well. This game is important as any other. The result will reflect the effort we put in during the week.”

“Newton is a well-oiled team and has gained momentum from their past few matches.  We will need to fire on all cylinders to be successful in this match,” he said.

Mr Bailey added that the forwards will be important in the game, “There are no key players to mention, but it’s going to be a tightly contested battle between the two packs of forwards. I’m excited for the first scrum of the game!”

Roses United calls on their fans to rally behind them as they aim to dethrone the reigning Witsentraal Grand Challenge Champions, Newton.

Newton will be eager to prove themselves, and fans can expect a fast, physical, and exciting derby where every point will count.
