Luke Baartman: From Surviving a Deadly Shooting to Becoming One of Betway Premiership’s Biggest Prospects
Cape Town Spurs’ Luke Baartman is poised to be one of the hottest strikers in South African at the age of 18.
Cape Town City forward Luke Baartman has been making big waves in the Betway Premiership, showing his creative ability, goal instincts, and maturity beyond his age.
All of these attributes already have him linked to local giants Kaizer Chiefs and legendary Scottish outfit Celtic.
Early last year, Baartman received the Player of the Tournament Award in the Bayhill Premier Cup and was also selected to be a part of South Africa’s u17 AFCON squad.
On the 22nd of May last year, the teenager’s football career nearly ended before it could kick off, as tragedy struck him and his two friends after being caught up in a shooting near a shop in their neighborhood.
Luckily the youngster recovered and made his professional debut against Orlando Pirates late last year. The teenage striker went on to make 10 appearances for Cape Town Spurs, scoring 2 goals in the process.
While his statistics are not terrific, it has to be noted that he barely got enough game time, and it was his 1st season in the top flight. Despite these two factors, Baartman is still showing enormous potential and is improving his movement and positioning every time he plays.
Despite pledging his loyalty to his hometown club, Baartman is most likely to reconsider his future as Cape Town Spurs got relegated from the topflight last season.
With Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC eyeing the exciting teenager, he has come out recently and made his desire known to play for the best in the future.
“I think for the next two years, I want to play this season out and score many goals. Hopefully, there could be bigger opportunities from bigger teams.”
Cape Town Spurs’ technical Director Sean Connor also compared the wonderkid to two former Celtic Players.
“His spatial awareness, movement, and pace reminded me immediately of Craig Bellamy and Henrik Larsson from when they were at Celtic.”
From overcoming an almost deadly shooting to making his Betway Premiership debut, Luke Baartman’s story is truly inspirational.
It shows that you can overcome adversity and escape from your difficult environment if you put in the hard yards and keep prospering.
The young striker will be a player to look out for in the National First Division this season and may well be among the top-scoring teenagers in the country.
