SA Deaf Rugby Player: The Inspirational Rise of Laszlo Maya

A talented rugby player from Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape, has made a name for himself on the international stage with outstanding performances in the South African Deaf Rugby matches against England and Australia.

On 7 and 8 August 2024, Mr. Maya represented South Africa in the Deaf Rugby 10s at St. Stithians in Johannesburg. Although the team faced close losses—7-10 against Australia and 24-27 against England—Mr. Maya’s journey, which included scoring a try in each match, showcases his dedication and natural talent.

Mr. Maya’s path to success hasn’t been easy. Born and raised in Graaff-Reinet, he developed a passion for rugby at a young age, practicing on local fields. However, his biggest challenge came when he received a cochlear implant. While the implant restored his hearing, his parents only allowed him to continue his rugby career in Grade 11. Since then, he has embraced every challenge, as long as it allowed him to keep playing the sport he loves.

Despite the obstacles, Mr. Maya believes in the strength of the coaching resources in Graaff-Reinet. He credits the experienced coaches and past players from his hometown for helping him reach the national level. His rise in rugby is a powerful example of how determination and hard work can overcome difficulties, inspiring many young athletes to pursue their dreams.

Mr. Maya has a simple yet powerful message for young players: "Whoever you are, be a good one. Whatever you do in life, do it to the best of your ability. You’ll reap the rewards in unexpected ways."
