Addressing Gangsterism in Mitchell's Plain: A Community's Fight for Safety

Gangsterism has long plagued the vibrant community of Mitchell’s Plain, particularly in areas like Beacon Valley and Eastridge. However, local leadership is taking significant strides to combat this issue. Solomon Philander, the sub-council chairman and councillor for Ward 116, is at the forefront of these efforts, emphasizing collaboration and community engagement.

Since joining the council on May 21, 2011, Philander has witnessed firsthand the challenges posed by organized crime. “Organized groups engaging in criminal activities have been part of our community for many years,” he notes. Yet, Philander remains optimistic, asserting that the key to creating a safer environment lies in active citizenship and community involvement.

Community Engagement

Philander's approach focuses on strengthening partnerships with various safety structures, including Neighbourhood Watches (NHWs), Community Police Forums (CPFs), Area-Based Teams (ABTs), and Area Coordinating Teams (ACTTs). "As a municipal councillor we work closely with safety structures to create a safer community by active citizenships", he explains. This grassroots effort not only fosters vigilance but also builds trust between community members and law enforcement.

Resource Allocation

During the 2021/2022 financial year, Mitchell’s Plain Sub-council 12 distinguished itself by successfully completing most of its ward allocation projects. A significant portion of these funds is directed towards enhancing community safety. Philander explains, “We allocate ward funds to purchase safety equipment for NHWs, ensuring they have the tools they need to protect their neighborhoods.”

Additionally, the ward allocation supports the Community Ambassadors program, which aims to engage and educate residents about crime prevention strategies. Philander emphasizes the importance of addressing issues in public housing, stating, “We’re looking at problem buildings and anti-social activities in council rental units, which are often hotspots for crime.”

Monitoring Crime Hotspots

To effectively tackle gangsterism, Philander attends sub-forum meetings that focus on tracking crime hotspots within the community. By identifying these areas, they can direct our resources where they’re needed most. This proactive approach allows local leaders to adapt their strategies and implement targeted interventions.

A Collective Effort

While Philander and his team work diligently to address gangsterism. With the involvement of local organizations and citizens, Philander believes that Mitchell’s Plain can reclaim its streets from the grips of crime
