Liezl Smith
A podcaster who was born in the Northern Cape, Upington Rainbow (DoB: 5 July 1981). She is a South African who worked in community radio for 10 years serving as a producer, presenter, and co-host. She is a philanthropist who is doing community work.
EARLY LIFE
Liezl started her primary school at Norridge Park Primary School in Eersterust and enrolled at P.S Fourie Primary School from standard 1 at the age of 9 years in 1991. She attended Keidebees Primary School from 1992 to 1995.
She then went to Carlton Van Heerden High School, where she started her Standard 6 in 1996 and completed her Standard 10 in 2000.
PERSONAL LIFE
At the age of 9 years in 1991, Liezl was involved in a car accident with her family and two other passengers, and one of them died on the scene, on their way from Upington to Pretoria at Vryburg, Northwest. She sustained injuries to her head and parts of her body. She was with her father as the driver, an anonymous woman sitting in the passenger front seat, herself on the passenger seat at the back with her two brothers and two other passengers. She was in a coma for 3 months post-accident and could not walk for 6 months. She was admitted to the Kimberly hospital after the car accident with her father, who also died a few weeks post the accident while in a coma. One of her brothers was admitted to Bloemfontein hospital as he had sustained minor injuries.
Liezl had memory loss due to the accident for a month and a half. She injured her face as well, which resulted in permanent scarring, some of the nerves in her mouth do not function properly. She experienced bullying based on her appearance since the car accident.
CAREER
Mrs. Smith started working in community radio in 1999-2000 in Upington, at Radio Riverside, and then at Poort FM from 2016 to 2018. She relocated to Bloemfontein, where she continued to work in radio and joined CUT FM from 2018 to 2019. Liezl moved to Pretoria and rejoined Poort FM from 2019 to 2023. She used these platforms to express herself, and in her radio years, she interviewed prominent people such as Dr Emmanuel Taban, a doctor who successfully used a procedure called bronchoscospy on a chronically ill Covid-19 patient and Dr Imtiaz Sooliman of Gift of the Givers.
Liezl left radio in February 2023 and started her podcast named Kuier Met Liezl, and uses the platform to inspire, entertain and share her life experiences; she invites guests to join as well.
COMMUNITY WORK
- During her years in Bloemfontein in 2018-2019, she used to help local welfare, she held an event serving English breakfast to the underprivileged kids and called the event RISE UP
- She helped underprivileged kids with toiletries and basic hygiene products in Bloemfontein.
ACHIEVEMENTS
- Nominated for Woman of Stature Awards for Women in media, and she was a finalist.
- She was a finalist for Ms Bloemfontein in 2019
