HER JOURNEY: From a 1995 Classroom Dream to a Message of Hope for South Africa’s Youth

On Saturday, 24 October 2026, Ms Marita Meyer fulfilled a 30-year dream by launching her debut book, Her Journey, at the Cuyler Manor Museum in Kariega.

The book details a life story shaped by lessons, strength, pain, and grace. Although Meyer began writing during a difficult period on 31 May 2018, the dream was first spark in 1995 inside a Grade 9 classroom at St Colmcille High School in Kirkwood. Through her story, she hopes to inspire young people never to abandon their dreams and to look towards a hopeful future, even in an uncertain world.

Meyer explained that it all began when her Life Orientation teacher, Mrs Prince, asked the class what they wanted to become in life.

"Mrs Prince was not just a teacher who taught a subject, she was the kind of teacher who invested in a child's well-being," Meyer recalled. "She made you feel like you already had what it takes to make your dream come true."

Meyer said that because of a teacher like Mrs Prince, she was inspired to accomplish her dream of motivating others.

Speaking at her launch, Meyer shared an inspiring message with attendees: “We live in a world obsessed with results, numbers, recognition, and success. We often measure our worth by what we achieve and who applauds us. Yet, amid the noise of seeking approval, we forget an essential truth: our true worth lies in our character. It is revealed in how we treat others when no one is watching, in the kindness we show when there is nothing to gain, and in our courage to rise after a fall. Your worth has always been rooted in who you are.”

She added that sometimes in life, an individual just needs to hear one person say they believe in their vision. Hearing that from her teacher created a profound shift within her.

Today, Meyer hopes to encourage young people across South Africa and beyond. She believes everyone has a unique journey and that what matters most is how one responds to life's obstacles.

After moving in 2024 to Graaff-Reinet, also known as Robert Sobukwe town, Meyer witnessed local youth taking their own lives over four to five consecutive months. The tragedy broke her heart and motivated her to publish her story as a beacon of hope for a generation in crisis.

Meyer noted that young people face high unemployment, uncertain prospects, and identity crises, leaving many to struggle with self-belief, anxiety, depression, and loneliness. She encourages them to develop practical skills, take small steps, and place faith at the centre of their plans.

She has committed to sharing her story, even if it reaches only one person. Her message is simple: whatever hardships you face, do not give up on life.

Saturday’s launch was hailed as a resounding success by organizers and attendees alike. Meyer expressed her heartfelt gratitude to photographer Ms C. Dennis, the catering team, Mr Adams for the décor, Mr Moos and Ms Davids for music and sound, programme director Mr Accom, the Seekoei family, and everyone who attended.

Her Journey is more than a book, it offers hope to a generation struggling in silence and honours every educator who believes in a child.
