Uncovering the Untold Story of a South African Liberation Fighter: Ashley Kriel

On July 9, 1987, a 20-year-old liberation fighter, Ashley Kriel, was brutally assassinated on the Cape Flats. His story is one of courage, conviction, and sacrifice. Yet, despite the passage of time, his two sisters are still grappling with the trauma of his death.

Adriaan one of the organizers representing to commemorate Youth Day and honor Ashley's legacy, the Public Urban Society Centre (PUSC) is hosting the 2nd Edition of an event that aims to educate young people about the role they played in the struggle for liberation. “The event will screen a short documentary about Ashley's life and role leading to his death” says Adriaan. He also mentioned that this year's event will also serve as a build-up to the Employment Expo, which will focus on job creation through Small Medium Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). The Expo will be hosted in partnership with GCIS (Government Communications and Information Services), CoCT Economic Development Units, and other Government Agencies.

The event's objective is to inspire a new generation of social entrepreneurs who will service their communities. Adriaan emphasized that they hope attendees will leave with an appreciation for the heroism displayed by young people and reflect on the sacrifices made for the freedom we enjoy today. He encouraged participants to understand how they can use their platforms to be a voice in their community and society.

“The event will feature a panel discussion on how community members and youth can participate in local government through Ward Committees and Community Forums” says Adriaan. Ras Hein, a 33-year-old from George, South Africa, who has over 10 years of experience in youth development, NGO operations, and consulting, will share his insights on how communities can organize to participate fully in local affairs. He emphasized the importance of community engagement, P.U.S.C has been actively involved in the Committee of Ward 111 as the youngest member serving. “The organization has encouraged community members to familiarize themselves with policies and mandates of departments and engage in meaningful discussions”.

Hein also mentioned, “To pay tribute to Ashley Kriel's legacy, local hip-hop artist Niko10Long will headline the event with his powerful music that touches on social issues and radical commentary”. The organizers hope that young people will become more conscious of the struggle for equality and find inspiration in Ashley's convictions. “The event aims to launch a social media campaign to raise awareness about Ashley's story and the importance of community engagement” says Hein. While it may not be as sophisticated as desired, the organizers believe that every effort counts in honoring this liberation fighter's memory.
