Drakenstein Football Enters Exciting Phase Under Newly Elected Executive Committee of the DLFA

The Drakenstein Local Football Association (DLFA) has recently elected a new board, with Mr Cyril Cain taking the role of president. He also serves as an SAFA Cape Winelands executive as the technical development HOD, bringing experience to the leadership. The new DLFA board is determined to develop football in the Drakenstein community and give young players the chance to succeed at the highest level.

The election congress took place on Tuesday evening, 09 September 2025. The new executive committee includes Cyril Caine as president, Allistaire De Koker as first Vice President, Lindokuhle Ndawule as second Vice President, Lionel Raj Maharaj as General Secretary, and Mxoleli Ngongoshe as Treasurer. Additional members include Simphiwe Mjikwa, Georgina Petersen, Bronwyn Booysen, and Nkululeko Mhlongo. The positions of Head of Schools and Head of Safety and Security remain vacant.

Mr Cyril Cain explained that the board’s main goal is to take Drakenstein football to the highest level. He asks that parents, clubs, and the community work together with the new executive until 2029. “The aim is to see that from this Local Football Association, youngsters and young girls can fulfil their dreams by playing at the highest level in this country and abroad,” Cain said.

Despite these ambitions, the Drakenstein Local Football Association (DLFA) faces significant challenges, especially with its facilities. The association relies on Mbekweni Stadium, which is also used for higher-level leagues such as the ABC Motsepe League, the Sasol Women’s League, the Regional Women’s League, and the Men’s Regional Hollywood Bets League. Other leagues, including the Juniors League, Super League, and Promotional League, are played at Boy Louw Sports Field, which has three pitches but is considered unsuitable for proper football matches. Even the Mbekweni B and C fields are considered mainly gravel and lack grass, making it difficult to host games at the required standard.

President Cyril Cain emphasised that the board aims to work closely with the Drakenstein municipality, engage with key stakeholders, and secure sponsors to improve football facilities. He explained that planting grass or installing turf is one of the Drakenstein Local Football Association’s main priorities, as the association has never had proper turf in its fields. “Our community just doesn’t know how it feels to have turf like other provinces and regions,” Mr Cain said. He urged the community, sponsors, and stakeholders to invest in the DLFA’s plans and vision, to produce the best players who can represent their families and the region both nationally and internationally.

The Drakenstein Local Football Association encourages community members, local clubs, and sponsors to support its plans and collaborate with the new board. By working together, the association hopes to unlock the full potential of football talent in the region and ensure that young players have the opportunities they need to succeed.
