Showmax to Premiere Docuseries Slay Queens on 31st October 2025
Showmax is set to premiere a new documentary series, Slay Queens, on the 31st of October 2025, with episodes rolling out every Friday. This five-part documentary aims to pull back the curtain on experiences of glamour, social media, ambition, and controversy in contemporary South Africa.
According to executive producer Vusi Zion (best known for soft life), Slay Queens positions itself are more than a mere spectacle. Through his creative collective Kaimal Pictures, the project is an opportunity to hold up a mirror to stories that are often made fun of and whispered about.
At its core, Slay Queens explores the hustle behind what many call the “soft life”, the pursuit of luxury, validation, and status often packaged through designer labels, VIP treatment, and social media feeds. Yet beneath the gloss, the lifestyle is fraught with pressures, compromises, and the clash between expectation and reality.
The lineup is deliberate and diverse. Featured voices include Cyan Boujee, a dynamite DJ and influencer; Jackie Phamotse, bestselling author and former slay queen; Inno Morolong, veteran social media figure; and Lebo Masango, anthropologist and author, whose academic insight frames the cultural, economic, and gender dynamics at play. Perspectives from a sangoma, a promoter, and even an Uber driver are also included, showing how different people intersect with or witness this lifestyle.
However, not everyone is pleased with the casting. According to a trending video on TikTok, some fans have expressed disappointment over Inno Morolong’s inclusion in the series. In response, Inno commented under the video post saying, "I'm not there as a slay queen though,” clarifying her role and distancing herself from the label.
According to the Showmax Series, Slay Queens doesn't shy away from asking hard questions: Is the slay queen a symbol of empowerment, survival, or exploitation? What happens if social media currency becomes a kind of debt?
Showmax has already released the trailer for Slay Queens, which can be viewed on Showmax Stories website and the Showmax original page. The trailer offers a glimpse into candid confessions, dramatic moments, and the tension between public image and private reality.
Viewers can expect a more nuanced, urgent, and human portrayal of life lived between aspiration and cost. Look out for its release on October 31, 2025, and prepare for a conversation that feels long overdue.
