Sibongile Marokana: A Trailblazer in the Male-Dominated World of Football

In a country where football is a predominantly male-dominated sport, Sibongile Marokana is breaking new ground. As the owner and chairlady of Lerumo Lions FC, a team based in Bethanie, North West Province, she is defying the odds and proving that women can succeed in a male-dominated industry.

Marokana, 35, has been involved in football since she was a young girl, playing for her local team and later coaching children in her community. Her passion for the sport only grew stronger with time, and she eventually decided to take the leap and invest in her own team.

Last year, Marokana assumed full ownership of Bokone NW FC, which she renamed Lerumo Lions FC. Since then, she has been working tirelessly to build a strong foundation for the team, both on and off the pitch.

"I'm not fazed by being one of the few women owning a football club in South Africa," Marokana said in an interview. "I believe that women have just as much right to be involved in football as men do. I'm proud to be breaking down barriers and paving the way for other women to follow in my footsteps."

Marokana's determination and dedication have paid off, as Lerumo Lions FC has seen significant improvements under her leadership. The team has become a force to be reckoned with in the ABC Motsepe League, one of the top amateur leagues in South Africa.

"I'm proud of what we've achieved so far," Marokana said. "We've worked hard to build a strong team and create a positive culture around the club. I'm excited to see where we go from here."

Marokana's journey has not been without its challenges as a woman in a male-dominated industry, she has faced skepticism and doubts from some quarters. But she has never let that deter her from pursuing her dreams.

"I've had to work twice as hard to prove myself," Marokana said. "But I've never let anyone bring me down. I've always believed in myself and my ability to succeed."

Marokana's story is an inspiration to many young girls and women who dream of making it in football. She is proof that with hard work and determination, anything is possible, even in a male-dominated world.

As Lerumo Lions FC continues to grow and thrive under Marokana's leadership, it's clear that she is not just holding her own – she's breaking new ground and paving the way for future generations of women in football.
