Remembering a Champion: Honouring the Legacy of Cancer Victims through the Fight Against Cancer

The growing concern of Cancer affects millions worldwide, claiming countless lives. In South Africa, cancer is a leading cause of death, with approximately 100 000 new cases diagnosed annually. On November 8, 2024, the Dr. Beyers Naudé Local Municipality hosted a cancer walk in Graaff-Reinet, from the Robert Sobukwe Building to the Botanicals Gardens. The municipality recently suffered a profound loss with the passing of the late Mr. Roxo a dedicated public servant and cherished colleague, who bravely fought against cancer.    The Dr. Beyers Naudé Local Municipality recognizes the urgent need for collective action.  The municipality embarked on a cancer walk rallying the community to join forces against this devastating disease.

Councillor Mrs Koeberg emphasized the lifesaving importance of early cancer detection at the recent event. She stressed that regular screenings and check-ups are crucial for identifying cancer in its initial stages. The Dr. Beyers Naudé Local Municipality encourages residents to prioritize self-examinations and scheduled medical check-ups and to seek medical attention for persistent symptoms. By taking proactive steps, individuals can significantly improve their chances of survival. Early detection saves lives, and awareness initiatives like this event play a vital role in promoting community health.

The Dr. Beyers Naudé Local Municipality organized a cancer walk to unite against cancer, honouring victims’ memories, promoting awareness and supporting survivors, patients, and families. Stakeholders including Sanlam, Metropolitan New Mobile, SASSA, Capitec, Telkom, FNB, SAN-Parks, Home Affairs and SAPS participated in fundraising. The event featured inter departmental competitions, including water bucket relays, egg-and spoon races and potjie kos contests, fostering community solidarity.

The Dr. Beyers Naudé Local Municipality (DBNLM) expresses heartfelt gratitude to participants, donors and supporters of our Cancer Walk. Your contributions facilitate emotional support, financial assistance and cancer research, benefiting patients, survivors and families. Your commitment promotes awareness, education and empowerment.
