Spaza Shop Extra Fee Charges in Ceres remain an Issue

The discussion of the spaza shops in Rooikamp Ceres remains a pressing issue, although some shop owners are praised for being friendly and supporting the community, residents continue to raise concerns about the extra charges they need to pay for basic needs like airtime, electricity, and poor service to other customers.
One of the residents who previously shared information, photographs, and voice recordings explained that the problem of extra fee charges on airtime and electricity continues and is overlooked by many community members. She says, “Everyone in Ceres is aware of what is going on, but still, people don't see the bigger picture. Mr Parker from Sunshine Superette is praised for his kindness and how he treats people and the workers, which is true; however, he also charges extra for airtime and electricity.”
Even though some spaza shop owners enjoy the goodwill for their customer service and community involvement, the difference in the money they take from the community unlawfully highlights the situation. The question remains about whether their practices follow the law. According to a resident, in some of the areas, the spaza shops have worse reputations, and the residents still complain not only about the extra charges but also about disrespect and poor service.
The matter is further complicated because some of the residents are hesitant to speak openly about their experiences. “Our community complains about certain things, but when it's time to speak up, they hide behind the curtain,” the resident added. The silence and the public division make it difficult to hold the spaza shop owners accountable.
The matter remains unclear whether spaza shop owners have stopped adding extra charges, as some residents have not visited the shops in question. However, the inability of many Ceres residents to openly talk about this matter shows that it is far from being resolved.
The spaza shops in Rooikamp Ceres emphasize the need for stronger observation and ruling, as well as open communication between the spaza shop owners and the residents. Until then, the community will remain caught up between appreciation and positive treatment from certain spaza shops and their owners, against the frustration at practice that may be viewed as manipulation.
