“We are Hungry for Opportunities” says Wellington Youth

The Career Festival held at Wellington School of Skills, Western Cape on 1 November 2023 was an amazing gathering having young people from all corners of Wellington located in the heart of Drakenstein.

Hosted by Western Cape Community Education and Training College (WCCETC) it was a standout event where high school learners as well as unemployed youth could come and learn about all the amazing career choices waiting for them. The event consisted of WCCETC in partnership with various SETA’s who provided valuable information to attendees in the form of skills training opportunities, bursary, and internship requirements.

What is a SETA?

SETA is responsible for managing and creating learnerships, internships, unit-based skills programmes,

The functions and responsibilities of SETAs are set out in Chapter 3, section 10 the Skills Development Act, 1998. Their main function is to contribute to the raising of skills, to bring skills to the employed, or those wanting to be employed, in their section.

SETAS:

Esona Vika a grade 9 learner attending Weltevrede Secondary says “Teachers at school told us that we are coming to an expo day to learn about career choices”

“I learned that there are many job options available and that the SETAS provides bursaries which is good because this will help our family who do not always have the money to cover such expenses,” Esona said.

WCCETC was started in 2015 and has over 73 centers in the Western Cape alone and they are located within each province of South Africa. Speaking to Jeremia Thuisnsma who is the chairman of WCCETC he said “Our goal is to show the youth that there are many essential career options and those who have dropped out of school can even complete their matric at one of our center’s”

Mr. Jeremia Thuynsma is certainly a delightful person full of passion with the ambition to help the youth with the betterment of their lives.

Bergrivier High School Matriculant Ashwill van Rooy says “I have learned valuable information at this event especially when it comes to mechanical learnerships. I will definitely tell more people about the opportunities that are available for our youth”

The youth of South Africa will determine the future of the Country and if not looked after and guided correctly then a Nation will be lost. National Citizens must take pride and account for what the future of South Africa will look like and therefore must come together and work tirelessly in creating opportunities that will contribute to the future of the youth.
