Wellington Commuters Targeted: Youth Gangs Spark Fear on Taxi Routes

A new and deeply concerning wave of crime has emerged on the busy taxi route between Wellington and Paarl. Where commuters once only worried about roadworthiness or traffic, they now face a new threat: "Groups of boys, seemingly of school-leaving age, who are targeting taxi passengers in broad daylight".

These incidents are increasingly occurring at well-known stopping points, where young males—suspected to be in their teens and no longer attending school—storm the vehicles as soon as they pull over.

A Terrifying Experience

One person who uses the route daily shared anonymously how quickly an ordinary commute home can turn into a desperate scramble for safety:

"On the way home from work in the Wellington taxi a group of boys started running towards the taxi near the OR stop. We closed our windows so they couldn't grab anything. I hear it's a regular thing for boys to raid taxis to grab cellphones."

This testimony highlights the calculated nature of these attacks. This is no longer just petty crime; it is an organized attempt to rob people of their hard-earned belongings or expensive study equipment.

The Most Vulnerable Under Fire

What makes this situation so dire is that it is specifically the working class and students who are being hit the hardest. For many in Wellington, the taxi is the only affordable way to get to work or campus.

When a cellphone or a wallet is stolen, it isn’t just the loss of an item—it is the money for the month’s groceries or a student's only way to access their study materials.

A Call for Action

This is a new phenomenon in Wellington that local authorities cannot afford to ignore. The community is making an urgent plea to the Police (SAPS) and Law Enforcement to drastically increase their visibility, especially in the following hotspots:

  • Van Wyksvlei

  • Carterville

It is essential that there are visible patrols, not just on main roads, but specifically near the taxi ranks and routes where these groups of youths congregate. We cannot allow our streets to be taken over by young people who have lost their way.

The safety of the people who keep our economy running must come first.
